Aaron Smith's Big Moment

Writer's picture: Michael YardleyMichael Yardley

Aaron Smith is an awesome rugby player. The number 9 for the New Zealand All Blacks, he's made quite a name for himself with his high tackle, pass, and assist percentages. But when the name "Aaron Smith" is heard by an All Blacks fan, his stats aren't the first thing that come to mind. The first thing that comes to mind is a legendary ending to a line out where his team mate passes the ball to him, and he catches it perfectly... with his face.

As the lineout ended, another All Blacks Legend, Richie McCaw, tossed the ball towards Smith right as the whistle blew, telling them to stop. Aaron Smith stood up straight, not realizing McCaw had already thrown the ball and hit him in the face. The crowd in that moment went more wild than they did during any try in the game.

Despite how much he worked to show that he was a worthy member of the All Blacks, many people still only know him for that moment he took a ball to the face. To this day he still plays for the All Blacks but everyone will always remember him for that moment and not for any of his countless other awesome moments.
