Rugby's Latest

Writer's picture: Michael YardleyMichael Yardley

The past few months have been momentous for rugby. While not much has changed strategy-wise, our viewing experience is constantly getting better. But perhaps the most important things to know are these:

MLR To Release Free App

Major League Rugby, the premier funnel for rugby in the United States, announced that they are releasing a free app for your viewing pleasure. It will be available this week, just in time for kick off, 7 days from the publication of this article on March 20th.

The kickoff game will be played between Old Glory DC and NOLA Gold at 4:00pm (ET). This app has been in the works for quite a while, and while it can present some challenges to the growth of MLR, seeing as they will not have the in-your-face publicity of ESPN to back them up throughout the season, bringing in new viewers constantly, the app also has some obvious upsides. None of us rugby fans will have to fork over extra cash to just watch our away games. While many of us would much rather be at the game with some popcorn in hand, it makes it easier for the masses to keep up on rugby.

World Cup Fixtures Announced

The fixtures for the 2023 rugby world cup have been announced and frankly, we couldn't be more excited. While our US Eagles have had a rough time getting anywhere in the rugby world cup, many are slating this 2023 team as becoming the biggest upset since Japan beat South Africa in 2015, arguably one of the most enthusing games in sport history.

The challenge is that the US hasn't actually qualified yet because of their poor performance in the 2019 World Cup. But if they do, more likely when they do, they will either be pitted against England, Japan, and Argentina (along with either Samoa or Tonga, some incredibly strong teams,) or they will be pit against New Zealand. An obvious powerhouse, beating NZ would be a daunting task for the US. But comparatively, I'd rather take my chances with pool A than pool D.

Living Legend

Last but not least, the retirement of a certifiable legend. Without a doubt, Sonny Bill Williams is one of the most influential men in the sport of rugby. He recently announced that he was going to pursue his boxing career a bit more than he did before his explosion as one of the most beloved All-Blacks ever. While we didn't think that would mean he'd quit rugby for good, he has officially announced his retirement and was released honorably from the All-Blacks.

This man is truly a force to be reckoned with. one of the tallest rugby players today, he's a staggering 6' 3" and about 250 pounds of solid muscle. This mountain of a man has competed in three rugby world cups, including two winning teams. He has led New Zealand to some of the greatest wins of all time and the overall performance behind this man is truly incredible. Any student of rugby would be wise to study at the feet of Sonny Bill.

And that's it! The rugby stuff you'll want to know right now! With Major League rugby starting next week there will undoubtedly be a plethora of things to talk about but for now, set a reminder for your favorite games, get tickets for the World Cup and binge watch some of Sonny Bill's games.
